Photo freezes when stitching panoramas with GPU acceleration

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Photo 1.9.2 consistently freezes when stitching panoramas from 16 bit TIFF files with GPU acceleration. Occasionally I get a blue screen with SYSTEM_PTE_MISUSE error.

Seems OK with no GPU acceleration. Its also faster with no GPU acceleration so I'm happy at the moment.

Details below:

  1. Files exported from Lightroom 6 classic as uncompressed TIFF.
  2. Add files OK
  3. Files load OK
  4. Files stitch OK
  5. Render returns to develop workspace, pano shows and updates with stitched image
  6. Photo freezes

Photos and crash reports can be downloaded here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/v6xc96mo7ell6bq/AAAhd5qC9g4YsQLHHWi6qiV-a?dl=0

Hey DrBob53,

Absolutely fantastic bug report—thank you.

I suspect Capture One here. I will guess that changing the renderer to WARP won't crash it either.

The crash report folder in that Dropbox link is empty - can I assume that the upload is still happening or have I missed something? When I first looked, there were 10 images and now there are 12 which is why I'm assuming.

Which version of APhoto do you use?

A side tip; you don't need Malware Bytes in addition to Microsoft Defender.

APhoto: 1.9.2.1035

I was going to have a look for a beta tomorrow. I think I saw somewhere there was a beta tackeling the problems with OpenGL.

Re: Malware bytes.

I beg to differ (based on 5 years on a support desk for a Windows product and as a developer).

PS If you have time and could look at my post:   Stitching problems in 360 panorama, I suspect its a bug rather than finger trouble.

Great product, beats the pants off PSP. Cant wait for DAM (once footnotes in Publisher are fixed)!

I see an Intel DLL triggers the crash. Open an Admin Console and enter sfc /scannow

Hi,

I have done some more experiments, most significant is uninstall & remove Intel optane memory. I still get application crash, but it is not reproducible. My feeling is the problem is memory related in some way. I dont get crashes when processing smaller JPG or 8 bit tif's. I have made a screen recording of a recent crash while task manager shows memory consumption. Note the available memory gets very low shortly before the crash.

The crash happens about 2.40 into the video (0952 computer time). Screen goes blank, computer sounds a couple of soft beeps and then screen starts to recover. One thing I have noticed is that switching between apps while Photo is processing the panorama tends to increase the probability of a crash.

I have run Windows memory test utility and no problems with memory.

I have a couple of other observations, but I'd like to get the crash sorted first.

Thanks for taking this up.

It looks to me like the swap file is too small.

Open the Windows search and type "advanced system settings" (without the double quotes).

  • In the PERFORMANCE section, click on Preferences.
  • In the new window, select the "Advanced" tab.
  • In the "Virtual memory" section, click Change.

Is the file size managed automatically?

Good thought - its currently set to 6963MB with 'Automatically manage page file' checked. I guess when I was using the Intel Optane memory it was mapped to the optane disk (32GB) and might have run out of room. I also have 2x 1TB SSD drives with over 200GB free on each so that might explain why I got reproducible crashes with the Optane memory installed, but would not explain the random crashes when it is disabled. I have another photo/panorama application that had issues with openGL because the programmers used an out of date library. This has been resolved for over a year since they updated the 3gl library (may be relevant, they ship d3dcompiler_47.dll version 10.0.17763.132 while you are shipping 6.3.9600.16384)

Note that the event logs I sent in my last post were taken after I had uninstalled the Optane memory.

I have noticed AFPhoto is quite heavy on memory compared to eg Kolor Autopano Pro.
