I just opened a document in Publisher v1.92

In it there was some text formatted with Estelle Black SF.

Now I get the usual manager question about substitutions.

When I check the font list, this font is not listed. But it is installed, and if I go to Word, there it is.

So why is Publisher suddenly ignoring my fonts

What style does APub report as missing, and what does it suggest as a substitute?

There’s no italic version of Estelle Black SF, as far as I’m aware (and since it’s black there doesn’t need to be a bold variant).

Thank you, that seems to have cleared the blockage. Yes designer opened it fine, and when I went back to Publisher, there it was in the font list.

Glad to hear it, although that’s even more weird than the original problem!

There must be a problem somewhere.

The same has happened with the Excalibur font.

My Printers Apprentice not only shows it as installed, but shows the font.

But it is not appearing in Publisher

Is it also not appearing in Designer? And does the attached help, as it seemed to do last time around?

Weirder and weirder said Alice.

The design opened OK and said that the font was present.

Publisher still refused.

So I saved the package in Designer, then reloaded the font from the package.

It said font present - do you want to replace it, answered yes and installed.

Went to Publisher which bythen was behaving.

There must be a weird bug in there somewhere.

But ALFRED, I must say a sincere thanks to you - you have now answered and solved several items I have posted, so my gratitude to you sir.

@E9B6

Most likely font cache issues.
I see you have a lot of downloaded "free" fonts.
These will often have broken or redundant name data inside the fonts - which can corrupt the OS font cache.
And can confuse the Affinity font cache - which is what appears to be happening.
You may also have a lot of duplicates installed - need to clean those out by removing them from the fonts folder(s).

The Eras ITC fonts from your image above are a good example of a cobbled together collection, ripe for problems.
They appear as four separate Typographic Families - should be one.
And clearly the vertical metrics of the Light font does not match the other three; probably came from another source.
These appear to be four mis-matched and/or conversion fonts someone stuck in a ZIP for people to download.

As I mentioned above, fonts like this often have broken or incorrect data which can corrupt your font caches.
Never a good idea to install a bunch of these without thoroughly checking them first.
So either learn how to check them properly, or stop just installing a bunch of stuff you are not using which may cause problems.

I took a look at the two fonts mentioned - and they both appear to  be fine.
So that, and the intermittent un-explainable weirdness, tells me the problem is probably in the font caches.
Un-install questionable fonts you do not need, clear out any duplicates from font folders, and the issue may go away.

Thank you Libretraining for your full explanation. Nearly all the fonts I have came with earlier editions of Page Plus etc and from font packs supplied by them.

Based on your response, I used Printers Apprentice to view all the fonts. About 30 or so came up blank. I set to uninstall them and got a message saying that it couldn't be done.

But immediately the font became visible, so the action I took must have reset the font cache.

After reloading Designer and |Publisher, the missing fonts all reappeared.

So many thanks for pointing me in the right direction
