Remove all pixels darker than ____

Recommended Posts

Because of the nature of the image I think if you invert Layer > Invert the image and use Filters > Colours > Erase White Paper will be the best option.

You will probably have to use a levels or curves adjustment to get the grey background blacker prior to inverting the layer.

If you want Thunder bolts and lightning, very, very, frightening, a plugin called Eye Candy can do some neat lightning bolts.

Made a few lightning bolts assets to give you an example: Dex Lightning Bolts.afassets

Hi,,

you can use these steps:

  1. copy image
  2. rasterize to mask
  3. add a curves layer to the mask
  4. In curves, select „alpha“ channel and adjust nodes to taste (move left node to the right, move right node to the left)
  5. when happy, nest the mask to the background

optional: add a fill layer with high contrast color below the background to better see the effect

it could be possible  in your image the white areas are already transparent

Another option is to use procedural texture filter.

A=(R-a)*b

add inputs

  • a 0..1,
  • b R

adjust a and b to taste

a controls threshold, set a to about 10% or 20% (position from left)

b controls smoothness. Set be to high values like 2 or 10

I'm just doing some better ones that are not clipped by the bounds of the document. Going to make about 20 of them as assets for the Affinity Massif - Booyakasha init!

You could even give G'MIC a try. A free Plugin with more than 500 filtres, formerly for GIMP and Krita only, but since last year also as 8bf-plug-in for Photoshop, Paintshop and Affinity Photo.

On Windows?
Has anyone got this working on Mac?

I have G'MIC working in GIMP 2.10.14 on Mac but because there is no .plugin file Affinity won't acknowledge it.

Don't really know how it works on Mac. Until lately I thought that it would only need the 8bf-file (which exists since last year). But that doesn't seem to be enough. The G'MIC-side says, that they haven't built a version for Mac yet, but some users may have compiled one on their own. For me as a Windows-user G'MIC doesn't work in Affinity too, because I foolishly bought my PHOTO-version on the Microsoft Store. This version doesn't find G'MIC (just like the version from the Apple Store would, I think), no matter where you install it. But I still use G'MIC with GIMP, and that works pretty fine.

For anyone wanting to install Gimp and G'MIC on Mac, I found that the latest Gimp 2.10.22 will not work with the created OS X G'MIC plugin, Gimp crashes the G'MIC plugin.

The good news is Gimp 2.10.14 works fine with this G'MIC OS X release, you can download Gimp 2.10.14 from here: https://download.gimp.org/mirror/pub/gimp/v2.10/macos/

You will also likely need XQuartz: https://www.xquartz.org/

  1. So Install XQuartz
  2. Install Gimp
  3. Unzip the GMIC-Gimp-2.10-osx.tgz file, you will end up with a folder of the same name.
    image.png.b9da119381c4e2e8fe4316e37c7b1120.png
  4. Double click on the folder and copy the contents The GMIC folder and the gmic_gimp_qt file
    image.png.815c9e66e19fea4709e9dfae19cc563f.png
  5. Navigate to the Gimp Application support folder (Note: the plug-ins folder may not exist, I just created it) and paste the folder and file copied in step 4 into the plug-ins folder.
    /Users/"username"/Library/Application Support/GIMP/2.10/plug-ins
    image.png.29cc2fae02fe9d765172e85b81d04784.png

That should be it, open gimp and start to play...

I think similar sandbox-limitations exist on mac as on Wndows, so therefore Affinity-store versions are a way to go (also to be able to install any previous version). G'MIC plug-in works just fine with the Windows (Affinity-store) version of Photo, though with usual Affinity-limitations for plug-ins (not for selection, and for pixel layers only).

One additional annotation for Windows-users: If G'MIC plug-in doesn't work with Affinity Photo and you don't want to install another program like GIMP or Krita, only to be able to use G'MIC, you can install the standalone-version of G'MIC.

The problem with GIMP on MAC seems to be, that they don't have enough developers who are MAC-users.

Yep, it's a percentages game, still, you can have the G'MIC plugins with Gimp on Mac and Gimp is really good, the plugins work very well too.

G'MIC 8bf plugin author here.

That bug was fixed in version 2.9.6.2 and later versions of the 8bf plugin.

The G'MIC Photoshop-compatible plugin is currently only available for Windows.

The G'MIC-Qt portion should compile natively on macOS, but the Photoshop-compatible plugin would have to be ported. The Photoshop-compatible plugin uses a number of OS-specific APIs for file I/O, image format support, UI, etc.
