Designer 1.9.1.979 on Windows 10.

I am trying to follow the video on custom brushes as in https://affinityspotlight.com/article/5-things-you-should-know-about-affinity-designer-19/?utm_source=SpotlightEmail&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Newsletter

The video begins with 5 vector shapes on one layer. As far as I can make out, they have to be on the same layer; otherwise the brush is created from only one shape. I can add them together, and then they do go onto the same layer, but then they are all changed to the same colour. How do I do it?

It starts with 5 vector shapes in a group, not on a single layer. He then rasterizes the group.
