Make your styles in Publisher. Place one of the five word docs in a Publisher doc and do a find and replace on the imported styles then delete the now unused word styles, import the next word document and repeat the find and replace. Save copies frequently. Reapply the text styles frequently.

My self, I would be tempted to nuke everything and work with plain text copies of the five word documents.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.4
Affinity Designer 2.4.1 | Affinity Photo 2.4.1 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.1 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

How do I make plain text out of word docs?

Save as plain text? Or, copy to Mail or other app than can make text plain.

Problem with plain text is that very often there are encoding problems and you also lose all local formatting (also the needed one), which is time consuming to add to text in layout if there is a lot of it.

If you copy text from Word then...

Edit > Paste Without Format

...in Publisher should strip off any formatting
