Affinity decides whether to save at 24bit or 32bit ?

Recommended Posts

Hello Affinity v1.9 Users,

I am trying to generate a PNG (w/alpha) SEQUENCE but Affinity seems to dictate export save formats (24bit vs 32bit).

If I create and image then hide a portion of the image with a mask - Affinity will export a PNG with ALPHA (32bit file).

If I create and image with a FULL WHITE mask (to display entire image) - Affinity will export a PNG with NO ALPHA (24bit file) even though an alpha clearly exists.

Its almost like Affinity is trying to do me a favor with file size or something like that - deciding a mask/alpha channel isnt necessary because there is no transparency in the image.

My PNG sequence must be entirely 32bit to playback properly in broadcast gear.

Does anyone know how "I" can dictate the bit depth...not Affinity?

Thanks guys

Hi,

That's a good question.

I created one semi-transparent pixel in the bottom right corner, and it worked. mask.afphoto

To display the pixel grid, go to View > Show Grid

I've already noticed similar quirks/bugs/"features" (?!) as well.

Playing with it right now, a "quick'n'dirty" workaround to force an alpha channel would be:

  1. add mask layer
  2. change 1 pixel to 99% opacity
  3. merge visible layers
  4. export

This lone 1%-transparent pixel should be virtually invisible, as long as your gear accepts this kind of modificiation.

@telemax had the same idea but was faster while I was still exploring other possibilities which didn't work… :)

Another workaround, quick'n'easy but Mac only:

  1. select all (marching ants)
  2. copy to clipboard (the layer must be selected in Layers panel)
  3. open Preview app
  4. File > New From Clipboard
  5. Save As > PNG

PNGs generated via Preview app always have an Alpha channel.

Poradím vám trik - vytvořte prázdný příspěvek, a ihned ho skryjte (Options, Hide). Tím se váš příspěvek vloží ihned za příspěvek, na který chcete reagovat. Pak váš příspěvek editujte, doplňte, a až pak zviditelněte. A už vás nikdo nejspíš nepředběhne :-)

Je škoda, že forum neposkytuje nějakou indikaci, že na stejný příspěvek už právě někdo odpovídá, takže pak dochází k těmto kolizím a duplicitám.
