Exclamation mark in font menu

The exclamation mark Affinity puts before the font name means it is a fallback font. That happens either if the font itself isn't available, or if it is available but doesn't support the selected character. In this case it sounds like the latter. For example, if you type "b" (U+0062, Latin B) and then format it as Symbol, Affinity will draw it using a fall-back font because Symbol doesn't define "b". It does define "β" (U+03b2, beta) but that's a different character.
