Non working True Type fonts in Affinity suite

Recommended Posts

It would be more helpful if you could click the "i" button in Font Book so that we could see the technical details of the ABB font. :)
Or better: copy & paste them here as text.

MacBookAir 15": MacOS Ventura > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // MacBookPro 15" mid-2012: MacOS El Capitan > Affinity v1 / MacOS Catalina > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // iPad 8th: iPadOS 16 > Affinity v2

If it is an old pre-Unicode TrueType font then Affinity apps cannot find the characters (because the codes are wrong)
and what you see is a replacement font for the "missing" characters.

If that is the case then the solution is to convert it to a Unicode font which is relatively easy.

This is a problem, but the font should still display in Affinity, albeit without any kerning.

This is likely the real issue here.
For example, the Zapf Dingbats system font on El Capitan is also tagged as "copy protected", and it will also refuse to display in Affinity with an ! mark in the list.

Tell the client to provide you an updated version that is not copy protected, a.k.a. "Preview & Print Embedding Allowed".

Alternatively it might be technically possible to unblock the font with a font editor. Of course this is not exactly kosher, so…

Ah, found a possible solution, at least for Zapf Dingbats:

Use the Glyphs panel to insert the characters you need.

MacBookAir 15": MacOS Ventura > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // MacBookPro 15" mid-2012: MacOS El Capitan > Affinity v1 / MacOS Catalina > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // iPad 8th: iPadOS 16 > Affinity v2

If possible send me a PM with the converted fonts. Btw. how did you get access to the ABBLogo Font, ABB employee?

I will PM you a download link; no way to attach files to a PM.

I found the fonts in a very old WindowsXP era collection of corporate logo fonts (from 2008).
They appear to be the same fonts you have, same dates, etc.
I cleaned them up a bit (deleted some empty glyphs, etc.) and converted them ... to this decade. ;-)
Let me know if you have any issues.
