Hi @pixeldroid, sorry for the delay.

Other than holding Space the only other option with regards to the bounding box is when you have the Move Tool selected. On the Context toolbar is an option to "Hide selection while dragging", its icon is an eye in a frame.

If you enter the frame & type any character the handles disappear (just the box stroke remains). So, …

… move the mouse cursor hovering the character panel
… type once (& undo)
Then you can
use the mouse in the panel, type values and confirm with the enter key
move the text cursor (w/wo modifier keys) to navigate/select among characters

without activating the object's handles.
