I have installed the Affinity Photo update 1.9.1.979.  I have an HP Laptop running Windows 10.  Since installing this update, it turns my computer off as soon as  I start editing a photo.  This happens with RAW and JPEG files.

How can I solve this issue?

Does it literally turn it off?

or does it just hang?

any Windows error message?

For a few seconds Affinity is un-responsive.  Then all goes black.  Laptop does not 'wake up' by pressing space bar or mouse activity.  I only get a response when I hit the power switch and wait for it to boot up again.

In order to find out the reason for these crashes you have to look after by Affinity or the Windows system generated crash reports and log files. You can look if Affinity generated some crash reports (dump files) before exciting and crashing the system ...

... also if app crashes do tear down the operating system, then Windows should possibly also store a bunch of logging messages related to the cause ...

That behavior is probably related to GPU hardware acceleration handling and so GPU driver crashes if it shuts down the laptop.

You can also download and try out if the latest ...

... and see if it behaves (hopefully) different here.

And not to forget

  1. disable OpenCL in preferences->Performance of Photo
  2. Install latest OS updates and GPU driver (from HP, or NVidia if available)
  3. Activate default settings in GPU driver, and windows display settings (if changed)
  4. Activate „performance“ power plan in Windows
  5. connect power adapter (do not use battery alone) during tests.

Can you go into...

Edit > Preferences > Performance

and switch off (untick) Hardware Acceleration (if enabled)

Please then retest and see if that alone cures the problem

If not, please go back into Edit > Preferences > Performance

and change the Renderer setting to Warp (leave Hardware acceleration off)

Please then retest and let us know if the problem is now cured

The above 2 steps will help determine (or eliminate) where the problem lies and what the next course of action will be.

Thank you Carl 123.  That appears to have solved my problem.  I changed both settings.

Not MY Fault and v_kyr - Thank you for your suggestions.  Unfortunately they go beyond my technical understandings.  I'll have to wait for the 'Boy Genius" (aka Grandson) to explain them to me step-by-step.
