I have a converted Sony A7R camera which shoots monochrome. I use Monochrome2DNG utility to convert RAW file into DNG. Photoshop recognizes that the file is b/w and assigns Gray Gamma 2.2 profile to it. Affinity does not, and still treats it like a color RAW file. How can I direct Affinity to recognize grayscale DNG pic? I believe once it detects the grayscale pic it will assign Gray Gamma 2.2 automatically.

Welcome to the forum @ogk

Could you upload one of the files?

Which Operating System are you using? If Mac you have a choice of two raw engines, the apple or the serif versions, if you are on Mac have you tried both raw engines?

I dropped onto the monochrome2DNG forums earlier and put a post up there, apparently the Leica M Monochrom image also opens as RGBA/16 in Affinity Photo 1.9.1 so whatever is set by the camera and/or the monochrome2dng app Photoshop see's,  Affinity doesn't.

For what it is worth the Mac's Finder shows that DNG as an RGB document. Also there isn't a Greyscale colour mode in the develop persona, just the RGB develop.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6
Affinity Designer 2.6.0 | Affinity Photo 2.6.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.0 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

This is what I got back from the monochrome2dng forum so this might be helpful...

Monochrome2DNG-produced DNGs does not contain color data (CFA pattern, color matrix) in DNG tags.

It is possible that some other software does not read DNGs the right way (based on DNG tags only) but use:

  • Either camera vendor/model name (than use internal metadata tables based on make/model)
  • Vendor-specific metadata (makernotes).

You may try to:

  • Change camera vendor or model name via Monochrome2DNG Preferences (change Make tag/change Model tag on Output DNG settings Preferences tab). For example, append -BW or -Monochrome to Model tag.
  • Uncheck the 'Copy vendor Makernotes data to DNG'
