Dear Affinity Team,

I found no solution for that so maybe it would be a great feature to make all store resources automatically available in all apps after purchase and download.

After buying additional resources in the shop, they have do be (downloaded) and installed for all apps.

Maybe a specific folder could be defined by the developers where the purchased resources are downlaoded and stored once and all available apps could "watch" this folder and install the resources within the programs?

An additional feature for the great idea behind "Studio link". Buy resources once and get them installed in all purchased apps automatically.

All the best and regards

Alexander

Hello @AleBolbo,

the latest release (1.9) of all three apps introduced 'content sync of store purchases'. I think this is what you are looking for.

As the OP says:

Content syncing currently involves the content being downloaded separately for each app, instead of being downloaded once and stored in a shared repository.

This is true. I somehow missed that part of the OP's request. Sorry for that.

I am not quite sure if this would work out, because if all three apps are in use and all three (or two of them) access the content simultaniously this may cause conflicts. It may work if the content is read only, though. I'm sure the developers have thought about that before they came up with the currrent solution.

That’s a good point!

It isn’t obvious to me why that wouldn’t work.

Theoretically it should be possible that multiple applications can read the same file. But as a simple example I recall that Word and LibreOffice give out a warning if one wants to open a file that is already in use by another program. Then the file can only be opened as 'read only' and that makes sense.

I am not quite sure if the Affinity applications use resources in read only mode or if they perhaps keep them open to save changes to them. Perhaps I'm overthinking this? (Is overthinking a word at all 🙂 )

Concurency access to single data/files is a problem, but solvable. The problem will be that each application can be purchased from a different store, so then there are other problems with sandboxing and other "delicacies".

Good point. Another reason why they keep things seperately.

Although the apps can be purchased from different stores, the linked content is all from the Affinity Store.

I probably don't quite understand, how the problems with sharing of resources and concurency simultaneous access from three different applications are related with "where" the content was purchased (even if it was purchased in the same store).

Not "where the content" was purchased but "where the applications" were purchased. Sandboxing applied by Apple and Microsoft liimits what data the applications can access or share, and limits what applications outside the sandbox can access. That complicates having a common area that applications purchased from different Stores can share, and makes it harder figuring out how Photo purchased from the MAS could share with Designer purchased from the Affinity Store, for example.

But since it was a reaction to Dominic's post, it's important, that he understood. :-)

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying - I assumed it was quite obvious.

Just want to say, Many thanks for the given information and "overthinking".

I think I´m going to install my purchased  resources once within Affinity Photo and use the studio link (great!!) to get access to them in other apps if needed. So I could avoid  struggling with disc space (10 TB not enogh ;-.) and  also administration of what is where installed - or not.

Best regards, Alex

StudioLink won't help. That function is specifically in Publisher, and provides the Photo and Designer Personas there.

If you install in Photo, then from the other applications you'll need to use File > Edit in Photo. If that's what you meant, it will work. But it's not StudioLink :)

Yes , that´s what I meant ;-) Most of the bought resources are for mainly for use within Photo or Designer, so using Publisher I would be able to work within photo and use the resources there... Very kind that you again took care of me as a beginner with Affinity. Not only great products but also a very helpful community.
