Designer on Mac: how to convert type to a Selection?

Recommended Posts

I get converting type to curves. How then to turn type into a selection - ie - with marching ants, where you can either paint inside or outside of that selection?

Can designer make a marching ants selection from type?

Thank you!

Duplicate your Text Layer (no need to convert to curves) then Rasterize (and trim) and go to the Pixel Persona to use the pixel tools.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.4
Affinity Designer 2.4.1 | Affinity Photo 2.4.1 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.1 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Why duplicate the text layer?

Once I have it in Pixel persona, I'm finding it hard to get a selection out of it. Magic wand lets me pick only one shape (letter) at a time. Is there a more efficient way of converting type to a marching ants selection?

Thank you!

Insurance against loss.

There is a Contiguous check mark in the Context toolbar, uncheck it and you'll be abled to select all pixels of whatever colour you click on.

Then you could also try using the Menu Select > Tonal Range > .... or Colour Range.... or sampled colour... Again this is all in the Pixel Persona.

In Designer you can create a Mask Layer based on the "marching ants" from the Pixel Persona.
If you need more options, you'll need Photo. Then you can switch back and forth via File > Edit in Photo and File > Edit in Designer respectively.

Clearly this is a weak spot in my Affinity Designer toolbag.

Well, one of the Affinity's "killer features" is the interoperability between the three apps with a file format that accepts almost all of it regardless if it's afpub, afdesign or afphoto.
I also still haven't fully adapted to this workflow, having spent almost 20 years caught in the "Adobe mindset". :)
