Sorry if this has already been answered, just cannot find a similar question to mine.

I am simply trying to create some number icons, a simple circle with a number in it.

I draw a circle with the eclipse tool, and convert it to curves.  Then I type the number, and also convert this to curves.  Drag the number over the circle, select the two and subtract and all is fine.

When I try to import into fontello, the number is not present.  If I click Add on the icon in Affinity, it fills in the whole circle.

Not sure what it is I do, but occasionally with some things I can click Add and do not have the problem - the subtracted area stays as is.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

For fontello see "How to use custom images" (there then especially the section about "Importing SVG images") ...

Importing SVG images

You should understand that font formats do not support all of the features that the SVG format provides. Though we try to automate the import process, sometimes it's necessary to make adjustments to artwork in order to achieve the desired result.

Here are our recommendations:

  1. Remove all fills and colors. You can probably leave black fills. In fonts, fill is defined by contour direction. Make sure that you don't have any complex rules like evenodd fills.
  2. Remove all FAT line attributes. This is not supported by Fontello. In fonts, fat lines are drown by 2 nested contours.
  3. Join all contours to a single outline. This is the last and the most important step. Usually editors automatically set the correct contour direction depending on nesting and black fills.

... Affinity does export SVG here via style settings, which fontello might not like at all.

Thanks for your response, but I have already seen this information.

It does not offer help in the way of how this applies to Affinity.  For example, what is a FAT line, as I cannot find and reference to this with Affinity.

Will just keep playing around until I can find the solution.

Yes, sadly they don't tell much deeper things about those possible SVG generation incompatibilities. The only thing AFAI have seen is, that they might show shortly/temporary a popup box which names possible SVG conflicts or things they don't take into account then. - So you will have to use the try & error approach to find out!
