Is it possible to open an AI file which does't include PDF stream?

Recommended Posts

Well, the title says it all. I've got some templates from a printing company in ai format, but when I try to open them, I get the following message:

"Failed to open AI file.  The file doesn't contain a valid PDF stream"

Is there a way to open these files in AD or AP or am I forced to get Photoshop or Illustrator for a one time thing?  (I just want to use an online printing company to make some teaching materials to use in my school)

Any advice is appreciated, thanks

Dutch

Hi Dutch,

Nice of jmac to convert your files!

I found this site that may be helpful: http://www.zamzar.com/uploadComplete.php?convertFile=ai&to=pdf

It is a free online converter, that sends a link to your email for the converted file (I used Blur to mask my email, just in case it attracts spam).

The results are great & seems legit, I've attached the converted files of one legacy Illustrator file here.

Hopefully it is a good alternative to forking out for Creative Cloud!

Paul.

Affinity Designer can't open Illustrator files that don't have a PDF stream. I downloaded your files, saved them with a newer version of Illustrator that embeds the PDF stream and uploaded here. I hope they work for you.

Hi J!  I don't know what to say….  Fantastic!! You're The Man!  This is really mighty fine of you.

I've got the files in AD all looks well.. This is very, very much appreciated. Thanks a million!

Hello Paul,

You too… don't know what to say…. Both files work like a charm and it's really great of you do this.

I very much appreciate you taking the time to do this for me.

I've just checked out Zamzar but I didn't see an ai to afdesign option. How did you get the afdesign file?

Did you re-save the pdf file AD?

Also, you mentioned "Blur" to mask your email.  What's Blur?

Thanks again!

Dutch

These files are from very early versions of Illustrator that use EPS rather than PDF. You may not need to convert them. If you change their extension from. ".ai" to ".eps" then Affinity will open them as-is. In the current beta they will open directly without you needing to do even that.

Our EPS importer currently imports text as curves, so converting may be better for you if you want to edit the text.

Wow! It works, Dave!

I don't need to edit any text, since it is just a template for A5 size cards which the printing company gives out as a guideline so people like me don't mess up. The data itself won't include any text, just graphic data.

Thanks for your help Dave, I really appreciate it!

  • 7 years later...

I don't habe Illustrator.

Can anyone give ne a short description, how a Illustrator-designer can save a "AI with PDF stream"? Is it the new default-way, how illustrator saves AI-files? Or does the user activate special options the save-dialog?

When I tried to google this, I just found instructions how to generate a PDF file in Illustrator.

I think it's the default option in later versions of Illustrator, but it could be turned off by the user. It may not be possible at all in earlier versions of Illustrator, and in some other applications that produce .ai files.

I think it's called "compatibility mode" in Illustrator.
