Look in the Layers panel, and check the kind of layer you're dealing with. You'll probably find you have an (Image) layer, not a (Pixel) layer. To operate on parts of it, you need to rasterize it. Right-Click on it in the Layers panel and choose Rasterize. Or use the menu Layer > Rasterize. lightblue
Select image -> layer - Rasterize Don't work.. select the image and it's still just one big selection square Still cannot access part of the image The other problem is I can't even draw a circle around an object ... there is no circle tool like in every other paint program ? Seems like a Great program but it's starting to piss me off

Old Bruce
You will need to go to the Pixel Persona. That will give you different tools which will work with the pixel layer you now have. Click on that thing. Quote Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6 Affinity Designer 2.5.5 | Affinity Photo 2.5.5 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.5 | Beta versions as they appear. BUT Don't work either drag a screen shot into affinity Try to select a part of the image no go ... I'm prolly going back to a simple paint program that lets you just select part of an image and has a circle and a rectangle tool that lets you create a border around a selected area. telemax
Rasterize the layer, as @walt.farrell said above, to get the "pixel" layer. When you drag an image into the program window, in an open document, it will be an "image" type layer. The "image" layer allows you to quickly replace the image in the layout.https://youtu.be/IVlhZYcPZ_E?t=225 Quote Non-destructive Mask https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/150439-non-destructive-mask/Image layer & Pixel layer https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/146720-image-layer-and-pixel-layer/Brushes | Stars https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/135202-brushes-stars/

Try instead using any of the four marquee selection tools, the Selection Brush Tool, or the Freehand Selection Tool, all of which can be found in the Pixel Persona of AD. Note also the various items on the context toolbar that allow you to add to or subtract from the selection, to turn on & off anti-aliasing, etc. Quote All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.5.5 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 All 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.
lightblue
Thanks for trying to help I'm OUT This program is not Intuitive at all and I need something like photoshop and illustrator where I can call support and have them log onto my machine and solve the issue Cheap is NICE .. but Frustration is expensive .. I'll gladly pay more to stop this type of frustration I buy all Apple products too , because of the support ... and Cubase because of the tech support I make an exception only for native instruments stuff ...and I don't like any company that charges me 1300 bucks for a program and NO SUPPORT . At least affinity is cheap .. but it's definitely not for me . Edited February 28, 2021 by lightblue

Joey555111
Hi, I have the same issue. It does not work, even after deselecting and rasterize. It even says (Pixel) for this layer. Thank you for you help, Joe EDIT: I fixed it. DOCUMENT -> Convert Format / ICC Profile, change colour format to one of the three first RGB. Now I can enter develop persona. The color format, and the ability to enter the Develop Persona, has nothing to do with the discussion in this topic. Now I can enter develop persona. A few years later... I encountered the same (or at least a very similar) problem. I had copy-pasted an image into Affinity Photo and rasterized it countless times to be sure, but I was not able to use any of the selection tools. I could select the tools (flood, brush, freehand, etc.), but anything I did with them did not leave any selection, as if the image was immune to the selection tools. I Googled through many discussions until I found this one. I tried your method: I went to Document -> Convert Format / ICC Profile -> Changed the color profile from the default (iRGB or something like that, I don't see that on the list of selectable profiles...) to another color profile (Adobe RGB)... Voilá! Suddenly, all the selection tools were working. I tried to recreate the problem and undo the selection of the color profile, but that action was not saved in the history. After that, I closed Affinity Photo without saving, reopened it, and pasted the same image from the clipboard. Everything worked perfectly. The problem could be cosmetic as after changing the color profile, even before I tried any of the selection tools, the selection marquees of my previous unsuccessful tries suddenly appeared. I am not sure if the OP’s problem is the same as Joey555111's, but nevertheless, Joey's solution worked for me after a couple of hours of frustrated troubleshooting about a very basic functionality. I guess the problem is something about default settings after installation. I may fresh-install Affinity Photo for another PC to see if I can reproduce the problem. I had not used Affinity Photo for many months but updated the software few times in between last time and now. Thanks, Joey! Also apologies nor necro, but maybe this information will be useful for someone else as well. Windows 11 Affinity Photo 2.5.
