in painting tool not working

Since upgrading to  Affinity Photo 1.9.0 the in painting brush tool no longer works-it no longer colours the area for in painting in red (as on page 67 & 68 of original manual). Instead  a very thin vertical and transient red line sometimes appears,.I have tried altering the brush width and opacity with no effect. In painting still works by selecting and filling using e.g. freehand section tool. Any solutions welcome.

I apologise for the delayed response we we're very busy due to the launch of our recent updates and some posts such as this one slipped through the net. Do you still have this problem with the latest version of Affinity?
