Just installed v1.9.1 and tried it with openCL on. No good. Photo took ages to load and was slow to start with and as I added layers it got progressively slower until it froze completely. Luckily, as always, I regularly save my work.

The studio panels with openCL on are reduced to a crawl when trying to open a new panel i.e. I waited 3 minutes for the brush panel to open from the colour panel.

After switching off openCL, photo loaded in a matter of seconds and everything was back up to speed, no lag or freezes or crashes.

My windows 10 pc uses Intel 360 HD graphics with 8GB ram and, even though Affinity allows openCL it just doesn't work. I think you need a pretty powerful pc with a powerful graphics card to utilise openCL.
I think openCL should be turned off by default and user toggled.

No problem though, Affinity suite works great on my setup without openCL. I love Affinity Photo, having ported over from Adobe photoshop.

The problem with that is that very few users would ever think to turn it on to see if it works. A lot of users just run the program with the default settings and may be "afraid" to touch things they don't understand.

The Devs need rapid feedback on OpenCL so they can fix as many problems with it during this relatively short patching cycle of 1.9.x before embarking on the next range of beta releases, which a lot of users will never install/use.

Since OpenCL can provide a significant performance boost in the apps it would be wrong to default it to off for the "hundreds of thousands" of users that are now using it without any issues.

It's unfortunate that some users will experience problems and frustration with OpenCL not working correctly for them but the feedback they provide will allow the Devs to investigate those issues and to get it working for them (and others) as soon as possible.

As a famous pointy eared space pioneer once said "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few"
