I'm new here and to start with I would like to change the interface from black to light. I'd like to see what I'm doing and where everything is. Is it also possible to adjust the size of the icons? Thank you.

Welcome to the Forums, @Iva😊  You don't say whether you are on Mac or Windows.  If Mac, then click on "Affinity Photo, or Affinity Designer, or Affinity Publisher" in the top left hand corner of your screen, choose Preferences, then click on User Interface.   You can click on the UI Style: button for Light, and change your Font UI Size to Large.  You can then adjust the sliders for Background, Artboard and Gamma to suit your own needs.

Although you cannot change the size of the tool icons, if you hover over a tool with your mouse you will see a popup description.  In the Context Toolbar along the top of your screen, you can go to VIEW> then scroll down to Customize Toolbar and then look at the lower left hand corner of that popup window which give you the option to either have Icon Only or click on the tiny arrow and choose Icon and Text.  I hope this will help get you started!
