How far does it get?

Can you open the program or does it crash before you can use it?

Can you open the program but it crashes when you try to File > Open a file?

Also are you using Windows or a Mac?

Due to the fact that Boris Johnson is now our Prime Minister, punctuation, spelling and grammar will never be worried about ever again.  We now have far bigger problems to be worried about.

Go into Edit > Preferences > Performance and deselect Hardware acceleration (at the bottom of the screen) if currently selected

So, we can first eliminate that as the cause

Let us know how it goes, so we can advise on the next step

Hardware Acceleration is a new feature in 1.9.0 which is designed to speed up some graphic intensive operations by using the GPU in your graphics card

Since it is a new feature it's impossible to test it for every graphics card on the market and some have been causing crashes

A lot of the crashes have now been fixed and the next release 1.9.1 (due this week) will incorporate those fixes

I apologise as I am not very up on technical things!  So, just so I am clear (and since deselecting this seems to have fixed my current problem with the crashing) when I download the next update will I have to select the hardware acceleration box again or just leave it alone as it is now as deselected?

When you've installed the update, try using the app with hardware acceleration enabled because that can greatly improve the performance of the app, especially with filters.

With the 1.9.1 update some graphic cards will now be detected as not (currently) being able to use Hardware Acceleration and the software will prevent you from selecting this option if you have one of those cards.

If you are able to select the option you should do so and see how it goes with the new update. In theory your computer will always run faster with this option selected

If, once upgraded, reselecting the option causes your computer to start crashing again you should report it again so the Devs can look deeper into your specific configuration and work on a fix for the next release (or beta)
