Affinity Photo 1.9.0 on Mac Big Sur not showing adjustment sliders

Recommended Posts

Running Big Sur on a 2017 27" iMac 3.4GHz with 24GB memory. Have been using Affinity Photo for over a year and updated to v. 1.9.0 from the App Store. Previously, everything worked fine for me on Mojave and Catalina.

When I bring up a photo for processing and try to use adjustment layers, the sliders don't pop-up. Only way I can get them is to click multiple pre-sets, hope it pops up, then reset and go on may way. In some cases, the sliders never show.

Have looked through the Preferences but found nothing that would apply.

Any thoughts to solve this PITA would be much appreciated.

Some Mac users are reporting problems in this area.

Your replies are much appreciated. You're obviously a better searchers than I as I couldn't find references to this topic.

I can't believe that Serif changed this functionality on purpose to make it more cumbersome to use and hopefully it will get fixed SOON!

Seems like it's a system enhancement in the same vein that Apple's more recent ventures have taken, going from, "it just works" to "well, it kinda works".

Thanks again.

I think this change was the result of users complaining that it was annoying for the first ("Default') adjustment to be applied automatically whenever an adjustment category was opened.

Never noticed ANY adjustment applied. Just opened the Adjustment Layer and it greeted me with sliders set at the neutral point so I could make whatever settings I wanted. Now, I have to click multiple times on one or more presets, hope the slider opens, reset, THEN go on from there to make my adjustments. Makes no sense!

And (whether you noticed it or not) it

  1. created the new adjustment layer automatically when it displayed that dialog and
  2. if you happened to have the same kind of adjustment layer selected in the Layers panel it overwrote the settings with the default settings, losing whatever you had already done in that adjustment.

The first might not have been a problem, but the second was a definite issue for some users.

Having to click multiple times on the presets is a bug, which will be fixed at some point. When it is fixed, you will have exactly 1 additional click.

Alternatively, you can still use the Adjustments icon at the bottom of the Layers panel, which works without needing to click on a Preset.

Some Adjustment categories do not have a 'neutral' default setting, for example the Recolor, Posterize, & Threshold ones.
