Joining Curves (Laura)

Hi, I'm new to Affinity Designer coming from Illustrator. My question is about joining curves. When I join the curves - I'm having two issues. Pictured below

1. The A, P,P & Y is filled but not in B or R - why is this?

2. When I try to join the T to either the "Bir" curve or the "hday" curve - half of it goes missing

Note that the "t" layer is a Curve layer but the other two are Curves layers. The plural notation means those layers include more than one curve object. Because of the way joining curve objects works in Affinity, you will get unexpected results unless each of those curves is in its own layer and they each are open curves. Even so, you cannot choose which end nodes of two open curves will be joined -- it will always be the two nearest each other.

Are you really trying to ‘join’ them (a node-based operation) or do you mean Boolean ‘add’?

In the main window menu, choose Layer > fill mode and change to the one that isn't currently set.

I think it might be the direction of the curve rather than the choice of ‘alternate’ or ‘winding’ fill mode. Counters (‘holes’) in a letter are usually created by putting a counterclockwise curve inside a clockwise one.
