R Hoff
Was wondering how to create an (realistic) "falling snow" effect in Affinity Photo MattP
Staff Leigh Posted September 29, 2015 Staff Share Posted September 29, 2015 Welcome to the forums R Hoff :) This thread explains how to create snow with Affinity Photo: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/12897-create-snow/
R Hoff
Thanks Leigh, I don't see any step by step instructions there... well OK, a few steps. I can get the layer with noise added (then add some motion blur) but I can't find out how to thin the noise down, so that it doesn't resemble a mist or fog

Staff Leigh Posted September 30, 2015 Staff Share Posted September 30, 2015 I've made this quick video showing how it can be done in Affinity Photo. It's not perfect but it gives you the basics :) https://www.dropbox.com/s/mmhdz7yv5j2ny1u/Snow%20Effect.mov?dl=0 anon1, A_B_C, MEB and 1 other
R Hoff
Thanks for the tutorial Leigh. I still find my noise layer "thick" with noise... about 3 times as dense as yours. Could it be because I'm on a 5K iMac screen? I can't seem to thin out the "specks" of noise
A_B_C
Hi R Hoff, here’s another idea … a quick one … you could also create a heavily randomized brush and paint your snowflakes in different sizes on different layers. Then apply motion blur and adjust the layer opacity. This will give you fine control over the density of precipitation, so to say. I took the liberty to use Leigh’s atmospheric illustration for my screen shot below. Hope he does not mind … :) This idea is thoroughly explained in the following tutorial: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yP7qiZIuTA0 But please note, that all credits go to the author of this video, not to me … ;) Nevertheless, I added my Affinity Photo brush for you to try yourself.
