If I am understanding your question... Try turning on snapping with show snapping candidates. Then the center will be shown in a purple, and you will be able to snap to it. You didn't ask about a curve you said a pen line, that could be straight or curved. Do you have anything better? A workaround is to use the grid, snap to grid, align, and context toolbar > Snap > Align To Nodes That will at least show the values between nodes on a horizontal or vertical line.
