According to the technical specs of Publisher you can place various types of spreadsheets, including Apple Numbers. In my case the Numbers files can't be selected - they remain greyed out. IDML documents made in Adobe Indesign. DOCX, RTF and plain text documents may be placed. Documents made by Microsoft word, although I have no problem using Pages to generate those file types. XLSX Documents may be placed. Here it states three applications which can make and or export XLSX documents.
