AMD Radeon RX Performance Problems

Recommended Posts

@walt.farrell

Without OpenCL, some things take more time with large files or/and many layers. With the live filters, for example. A downgrade to 1.8.xxxx makes sense if you depend on a faster workflow.

On the other hand, when you downgrade, you have all the bugs that were fixed with the upgrade version. Here you simply have to weigh up whether you need the fast workflow or a stable programme basis.

I would like to have both, but life is not a pony farm. 😅

That would only be true if the 1.9 code path without OpenCL is different from the 1.8.5 code path (which also does not use OpenCL). I would expect the performance of 1.9 without OpenCL to be identical to the performance of 1.8.5. Perhaps @Mark Ingram can comment on that.

Edit: I see he already has commented on that:

Yes, that says that things should be faster using OpenCL.

But where does it say that 1.9 will be slower than 1.8 if you're not using OpenCL.

We're pointing out that 1.9 without OpenCL will have equivalent performance to 1.8.

Therefore, lack of OpenCL for your GPU is not a good reason to revert to the old release.

Nowhere, because, as you say, it won't. All the 1.8.5 code is still there (we call it software rendering) and there is a new hardware rendering OpenCL code-path. If you turn OpenCL off (or if it is disabled for your hardware, then going back to 1.8.5 is simply throwing away all the new features and fixes, it will not be faster.
