Make all visual guides always look pixel-perfect

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

Something I want to make a petition about. Simply put, please make all visual guides pixel-perfect. See the exagerated screenshot below:

I don't know if it's only me, but when seeing this, my eyes feel uncomfortable. Zooming in, there are antialiased parts that don't feel right:

There are instances when the guides are pixel-perfect (see the red ones, as an example) and they feel good to my eyes:

Plase, help me moving it to Feedback for the Affinity Suite of Products. I thought I was posting there. :$

Best regards!

Problem with this is that there are document sizes which are not actual integer pixel sized.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.4
Affinity Designer 2.4.1 | Affinity Photo 2.4.1 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.1 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

But if the program knows the real position of the guide (for example, the Margins or the Bleed), you won’t hace any problem.
This is only to render the Guide in a more comfortable way to the eye.

Best regards!

Okay, I misunderstood, render a crisp line is a good thing.

No, it's not just you.
I was just about to post a "rant" today, too.

My theory is that they have been designed to "look good" on retina displays. But I can't tell because I don't have any retina displays.

MacBookAir 15": MacOS Ventura > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // MacBookPro 15" mid-2012: MacOS El Capitan > Affinity v1 / MacOS Catalina > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // iPad 8th: iPadOS 16 > Affinity v2

There may be something to that. I do most of my work on a retina iMac, but this morning I was working with the grid in a Designer document on my older non-retina iMac at home, and I was surprised at how clunky it looked. Each grid line appeared to be two non-retina pixels thick, whereas I would expect them to be 1 pixel thick to have a similar apparent size as the same grid on a retina display.

On my retina display, the grid does have antialiasing as well, but it is not really noticeable. I had to take a screenshot and blow it up to be sure there was antialiasing on it:

Yep, that's what I see.

That's exactly what the retina "magic" is about. Of course, I know it from my iPhone and our brand new family iPad, the latter replacing and iPad 2 from 2011 – what a difference that is!

Anyway…
I wonder if we can convince Serif to do something about it though. I mean, my beloved "MacBook-Pro-2012-which-they-will-have-to-pry-from-my-cold-dead-hands" is definitely "obsolete" by Apple's definition, so it's unlikely an issue Serif will want to waste their resources on.

Apple still sells brand new Macs with non retina 1080p displays

Oh, really?
Good for us then! :)
