Brush working with mouse but not Wacom pencil

Recommended Posts

Hi!

First of all, apologies for posting what may be a very simple question. My wife (I'm helping her posting here because of English) owns Affinity Designer and she's a quite happy user. She upgraded today to version 1.9, and the brush he was using for a book she's illustrating does not work anymore. Other brushes work.

If using the mouse rather than the WACOM pencil, it works.

More data that I can provide:

- It's a pixel brush

- Windows Ink is enabled (but I tried also with High Precision mode)

I suspect it's related to pressure and that the pencil may have any problem which makes it work only on 100% pressure, but if so, I do not know how to do that.

Anything else I can work with to try to make this work?

Apologies for asking this question, for my poor data to supply along the problem description (I do not know what else I can report) and my broken English.

Thanks a ton in advance for your help!

Is it also enabled in your Wacom tablet settings?

How about Low Precision mode?

So, I tried changing settings in WACOM, but it did not work.

I must say that this does not happen for all brushes, only for a few of them (but the ones we are using in our project :()), and that they work with mouse but not WACOM pen. Rest of brushes work with WACOM pen flawlesly.

Is there any way to debug what is happening with a pencil?

Hi @JavierSpain,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble!

I would recommend making sure that your Wacom tablet driver is fully up to date - but if you can confirm the brush working in 1.8.5 and not in 1.9 then it certainly sounds like a bug we need to investigate further.

Could you please export this brush from Affinity and upload a copy of it here so we can look into this for you?

When you mention the brush 'not working', does it simply not paint when being used with a Wacom tablet? Or are you seeing incorrect results with the brush?

Many thanks in advance :)

Thanks a ton, Dan! The wacom is fully updated. I confirm the brush is working in 1.8.5 and not in 1.9.

I am not sure about how to upload it. Please allow me to explain. The brush was brought in here:

https://www.designcuts.com/product/25-graphite-and-charcoal-affinity-brushes/

I guess I do not have permissions to distribute it publicly, so I should not attach it here. Is there any way I can distribute to Affinity privately?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Many thanks for confirming that for me!

I certainly understand that you can't share this brush publicly, so I have included a direct upload link below -

https://www.dropbox.com/request/j6SfiEnBtBlNSWp7jKbm

This Dropbox account is limited to Serif employees only and the file will be removed as soon as we're finished our testing, so you should be okay to provide this without breaking your license agreement.

Please do let me know once the file has been uploaded :)

Hi Dan!

Thanks a ton for your help! I've uploaded a .afbrushes file with two brushes. The first one is the one I open this thread about: does not paint anything at all with the WACOM pen in 1.9, but it does paint if using the mouse. In 1.8.5 it works. I've also tried in some 1.9 betas, and it does not work there either.

I've added a second brush whose drawing is completely different between 1.8.5 and 1.9. In this case, it draws, but the effect is completely different.

I'm a SW developer, so if there is anything that may help you (trying some patches, debugging in my computer, hex-edit some files a few times until I find something working, etc) just tell me!

Thanks a ton again for all your help, Dan.

Many thanks for the provided brushes and my apologies for the delayed response here!

I have found both brushes to work for me, using a Wacom Intuos Pro, Affinity Designer 1.9.0 & Windows 10  -

brushes.jpg

Can you please confirm for me, which of these brushes was not working for you and which looks different in 1.9.0 compared to 1.8.5?

I did notice that the Pixel Tool brush required more pressure than I expected for the tool to activate, but the brush did still paint.

Many thanks once again!

Thanks a lot for your test and all the effort Dan! It's really appreciated.

To summarize my tests results:

Brush1 does not work with WACOM pencil in 1.9, regardless of pressure. Maybe it's a problem with WACOM pressure communication towards Affinity Designer. With mouse, it works in 1.9. In 1.8.5 it works with WACOM pencil.

Brush2 looks completely different in Affinity 1.8.5 and 1.9, specially if you draw over a previous draw of the same pencil.

How can I help debug the WACOM pencil problems?

Thanks a ton in advance for your help!

I am having this exact same issue, but with a Huion tablet. Some brushes work perfectly fine from multiple brush makers, and others behave strangely. When using the drawing tablet in pixel persona the brushes act as though they are on minimum pressure. However, all brushes work perfectly fine when using the mouse. I am using the brush tool on affinity designer 1.9.2.1035 for Windows 10.

That being said, in affinity photo 1.9.1035 the brush works as expected. I have attached a screenshot to clarify. this was the same brush, using the brush tool, no other changes in settings.

Hi @Linc3000,

Sorry to see you're having trouble!

Can you please provide a screenshot of the Affinity application with the Brush Tool selected (as I'd like to see your Context Toolbar settings) and a screenshot of the Brush 'Edit' window, so that I can understand which variables have been set here?

Many thanks in advance :)
