Affinity Publisher: Master page of even or odd pages on a selection of pages

Recommended Posts

Hello to all,

When you select a row of pages, for example from page 7 to page 32, and on this selection you want to apply for a master page only to the even pages or the odd pages, you cannot. This master page is applied to all the even or odd pages of the document.

I worked on a book of 210 pages in 15 chapters where the page headings took each time the title of the current chapter. Instead of 15 manipulations (1 per chapter), I had to perform 220 manipulations (1 per page). Hence the suggestion.

Have a nice day, and protect yourself well.

See: the error is quickly realized since it would have been necessary to obtain pages 1, 3, 5, and 7 with the same master page (here green rectangle), and, on the other hand, pages 2, 4, 6 with another master page (without green rectangle).

In practice, the book I was talking about is made in a single page mode with an internal margin larger than the external margin, therefore different even and odd master pages.

This obliged me:

  1. To create a first master page for the even pages and another master page for the odd pages in order to get the positioning of the text frames.
  2. To create a left master page for each chapter and another right master page.
  3. To create the table of contents so that you know where each chapter begins.
  4. Go to Excel to create the suite 1 to 209 of reason 2 (odd-numbered pages).
  5. Same for even pages with suite 2 to 210 of reason 2.
  6. Transfer each sequence to Notepad++ to transform the line breaks into semicolons.

  7. Split each sequence into as many chapters, e.g. 191;193;195;197;199 for the odd pages of chapter XV. Luckily, this chapter is short…
  8. Transfer the correct master page to each set of pages.

How long it takes and how much risk of mistakes!
It would be simpler to select page rows 191 to 200, add an Odd Pages filter, and apply the Chap XV master page. This would require only one manipulation, and the same for the other pages.

PS: For French speakers note in passing the big mistake in the French translation ‘Pages spécifiées’ (shameful false meaning and inadmissible in a professional software) instead of ‘Pages concernées’, and ‘À’ instead of ‘Sur’, and ‘Remplacer existant’ instead of ‘Remplacer ce qui existe’.

As a workaround, it should also be easy if you were working with Facing Pages. You could just apply the one Facing Page Master to the entire range of pages.
