"Pixelate" Live Filter

Recommended Posts

  • 1 month later...

i second this. The lack of a live/non-destructive pixelate live filter drives me crazy.

Tried different workarounds without success:

  • any blur live filter: fail
  • custom blur filter: destuctive, and fail
  • live perspective filter (downsample into a rectangle of 0.5* size, then upsample 2* again: fail
  • equations: destructive, fail
  • Posterize: fail,

Something like this as a workaround for the time being?

Thanks for this suggestion. But no - it is destructive.
This request is for a non-destructive version of the existing destructive non-live pixelation filter.

That's probably why I've called it "a workaround for the time being".

Interestingly, I just noticed that APh's Filters > Distort > Pixelate gives a different result than the scaling and rasterizing method; the former is harsher, the latter is softer.
So the good news is that there is even kinda choice. :)

I'm all for it much as the next guy, folks.
APh layers seem to be more or less equivalent to PS's smart objects, so it would seem to me that any effect could be applied non-destructively.

Without a non-destructive version of the filter, it's always possible to duplicate the layer, hide it and apply the filter to the new layer. At least then you can reapply the filter at a different setting, or get back to it with no  filter effect. Not as convenient as a live filter, but it does mean you can change the settings if you need to.

blur

The Procedural Texture has a few presets that generate squares/checkerboard of variable size. Applied to the alpha channel it acts like a mask, e.g. with the Smoothed Squares preset on Alpha you can vary the blur effect of the checkerboard mask.

Isn't there an equation to apply a blur to each square individually? Like each generated square being a separate mask layer?
(As I may have noted elsewhere, my last algebra lesson was like 40 years ago, so I haven't got much clue about it these days…)

PT & checkered: i use this already, but there is currently no way to average the RGB values of 4 / 9 / 16 / 25 pixels of one square.

Blur each square:

I assume you think of custom blur, only in destructive version available.

PT does not allow to access/process RGB values of neighbor pixels.

Equations (once again, destructive only) allows to access/process pixels at different x/y positions. But it dosn't work well if you scale up / scale down by a factor for this use case, as you cannot influence the resize-function (like bicubic). I would need a "hard average", not yet available.
