Newbie questions: Want create an ebook, how to?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I want to create an ebook (see attached example) which a customer can download and view on a desktop, tablet or iPhone.

Q1) Which Affinity package should I use:

A) Affinity Designer
B) Affinity Photo
C) Affinity Publisher

Q2) Do you have any guidelines on how to create an ebook on Affinity?

Q3) If I want to sell my ebook on Amazon do I need to create a special file?

Q4) Do you have basic tutorials on how to use Affinity?

Q5) I want to import images from a designer and not create them myself for my ebook, which affinity packaging should I use?

Q6) I want create my ebook as an PDF, can this be done?

Kind regards
SM.

@shebulmiah

Welcome to the Affinity forums.

At this time no Affinity app can create an ebook.  It is hoped that, at some point in the future, Affinity Publisher will include this facility.

Win 10 Pro, i7 6700K, 32Gb RAM, NVidia GTX1660 Ti and Intel HD530 Graphics

Long-time user of Serif products, chiefly PagePlus and PhotoPlus, but also WebPlus, CraftArtistProfessional and DrawPlus.  Delighted to be using Affinity Designer, Photo, and now Publisher, version 1 and now version 2.

iPad Pro (12.9") (iOS 17.4) running Affinity Photo and Designer version 1 and all three version 2 apps.

Can it create an A4 pdf doc?

Jip! - It's also able to generate a TOC and index, though to make those interactive (jump to position) you would probably have to set up all anchor/jump to points manually, which can be a sisyphean work for bigger PDF books then.

☛ Affinity Designer 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Photo 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Publisher 1.10.8 ◆ OSX El Capitan
☛ Affinity V2.3 apps ◆ MacOS Sonoma 14.2 ◆ iPad OS 17.2

TOC and Index entries are automatically hyperlinks in the PDF output, if the appropriate Export options are chosen.

Good to know for people. - It's obvious, I'm no Publisher user at all! 😀

There is an option in canva.com to create a4 document and turn it into pdf, can't Affinity do that?

Yes, you can use File > Export to create a PDF file.

Which type of affinity software should I buy to export into pdf?:
A) Affinity Designer
B) Affinity Photo
C) Affinity Publisher

Any of them can create a PDF. If you're creating a book, Publisher is probably a better choice, especially if it has much text. But Designer or Photo may also be helpful, especially if the book will also have photos.

I want to pull in pictures from elsewhere, just need to add text, headers, footer and some boxes and circles, do you think affinity publisher will be the one I need to get?

Probably Publisher, but you might want one of the others, too.

Why not try it with the free trial, and see how it goes? You'll have 10 days from the time you first run the program.

Affinity Publisher is the one you should get

Q2) Do you have any guidelines on how to create an ebook on Affinity?

There are, broadly speaking, two types of eBooks. The ones that work with Kindle and apple's iPad's iBook application where the reader can change the font size up or down for ease of reading and the software will automatically reflow the text. And a PDF file which has the font size fixed so each page is like a photograph, everything is unchangeable.

Affinity can produce PDFs but not the reflowable text versions which the Kindle won't .

Your example is a PDF but I can almost see it working as an eBook file, it would need more work to get it into that but Affinity cannot do that.

Affinity can make Fixed Format eBooks, not Reflowable format books.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.4
Affinity Designer 2.4.1 | Affinity Photo 2.4.1 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.1 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.
