I'm trying to apply a shadow to a person's hair, on the right side only.  I tried duplicating the layer of the person, then erased everything except for her hair and then applying a shadow to the small amount of hair remaining.  The problem is that even if the angle is set to 0 degrees, I still get some shadow around the entire remaining image.

Is there an effective way to add a shadow to only say the right side of a person's head?

Create a new layer and paint a shadow with the brush tool, you can select a shadow colour and change the blend mode of the layer or it's opacity to simulate shade, you can also use the live blur filters to soften the shadow edges or just use a soft brush.

If you are using the in-built Outer Shadow FX to generate the shadow, there are ways to detach the shadow to its own layer and then you can just erase the parts of the shadow you don't need.

An example image of what you want to achieve may be useful

I don't see any way to detach the shadow to it's own layer.  Unless you duplicate the layer first?  Can you elaborate?

-Thanks
