Hi Everyone,

Is there a simple way to create drop shadows that extend to the surface rather than float avove the surface?

The "outer shadow" tool is easy for the floating ring,,   but seems really complicated to extend to the ground plane in graphics software

Using 3D software as per the image below,  the shadows are inherently correct

You can create the drop shadow like so...

thanks.. nice workaround for simple objects but unfortunately

I was hoping the might be an equivalent "drop shadow" tool that would create the effect in one action

I need to do these for quite a complex series of shapes

I had to resort to creating the graphics in 3d software as per image below, also time consumiing..

does any 2d graphics software have this capability?

That's extrusion/extrude not drop shadow and Affinity doesn't have the capability to extrude text or shapes, there are lengthy workarounds that are more pseudo extrude, i.e. duplicating, but it's a lot easier to use a 3D app, I think Corel can do this and Blender certainly can.

As a side note, the beta version of Affinity Photo 1.9.0.206 will run Alien Skins Eye Candy Plugin which does have an extrude feature, the text and shapes need to be rasterised but the effect works well.

The image below has three of the Eye Candy effects: Chrome, Extrude and Drop Shadow.

Thanks Guys..

. I have Coreldraw and played around with the extrude  tool,, still not quite the same as a true 3d shadow.. it is more about extending the form.. not the shadow it cast

It is more like a drag shape action or leave a trail option...

thanks for all the help... if I find a one stop tool I will post it here

Well more realistic extrude and shadow tools are usually the domain of 3D modeling tools like Blender etc. and of course CAD tools. - A freeware crossplatform CAD one which can do such things is FreeCAD, see also part extrude here, or it's Github page.
