DeepL Translation:

Hello,
I work a lot with ribbons that I bought from Freepik or vexels and saved as assets so that they are available in every document.
Depending on the use I would like to recolor these ribbons of course. I have already started to put the objects together via "geometry".
In this specific example, I would like to select and recolor the "faces" with one click. But if I put them into groups, it doesn't fit with the strokes anymore.
I also have the problem that I have to manually select the surfaces for contours beforehand, because the strokes are surfaces.
I would prefer it if the surfaces were 1 object and the strokes an object. Is that possible?

Hallo,

The strokes can be expanded to become curves in their own right this can be done from Layer > Expand stroke You do lose the ability to adjust the stroke width but I'm guessing that will not be a necessary adjust once configured.

I don't quite understand how you mean that. If I expand the strokes I have the same as now.
In the screenshot I have expanded the strokes and then Layer -> Geometry - Merge Curves
but then it doesn't fit with the foreground/background (see screenshot).
Or have I understood you wrong?

I didn't test, but I have similar assets. I made them using global colours.

If assets can keep global colours, and are able to add them to the document's palette, or add such palette to the document if there's none, with the swatches for those global colours, it wouldn't be a problem: modifying those colours would suffice.

(I'm currently on my phone, and can't check if the global colours can be kept and added from assets to a palette)

Yes, but it's a bit complex.

First, remember that global colors require a Document Palette. If you have a document with a Document Palette and global colors you could either:

  1. Export that palette, and then import it into another document as a Document Palette.
    or
  2. Save the document as a template (.aftemplate) file, and use it when you create new documents.

So, suppose you have a document (Document-1) with a Document Palette with a global color, and say its name is Global Color 4. You can create an object, assign Global Color 4 as its fill, and add the object to the Assets panel.

You can then drag that object out of the Assets panel into Document-1 to make a copy of the object. It will also have that same global color as its fill, and if you edit the fill in the Document Palette the color will change in both copies of the object (and in any other object with that global color).

If you have another document (Document-2) that does not have a Document Palette in it, and you drag that asset into the document, its color does not act as global.

You can add the document palette from Document-1 into Document-2 (export from Document-1, import into Document-2 as a Document Palette) and if you do that, the color from the asset you dragged into Document-2 will act as a global color.

Now for the complex part: is

  • Each global color has a name. When you initially had the object with a global color, its name was Global Color 4 and that name was saved in the Assets panel along with the object.
  • When you drag the asset into a new document, you make a new object. Let's call it Object-X. This object's fill still has the name Global Color 4 (though you can't see that). But until you have a Document Palette, the fill color can not act as a global color.
  • If you add a Document Palette that has a global color named Global Color 4 then the fill for Object-X will act as a global color. That is, if you change Global Color 4 in the Document Palette by right-clicking and choosing Edit Fill, Object-X will change color.

Note that the initial fill color of Object-X and the initial color of Global Color 4 in the Document Palette do not have to match.

  • The fill color of Object-X could start out Green, but named Global Color 4.
  • And the Document Palette you add could have a Global Color 4 that is Red.

If you edit the fill of the swatch named Global Color 4 in the Document Palette, and change the color from Red to Blue, Object-X will also change to Blue. And any other object in the document which has a global fill color named Global Color 4 will also change.

You could, in fact, end up with multiple objects as Assets, each with a different fill color, but each named Global Color 4.

From the start there's a problem with the way the apps manage swatches and palettes.

We shouldn't loose them so easily, or need such tricks.

Each object, copied from anoyher document or assets, should add its swatches, if they were used on them, to a document, adding a palette if there's none.

If another colour have the same name, it should be named "same_name 2".

Options to merge palettes (to import external palettes in a document that already get one), replace a swatch by another or none (in this case, the colour remains, but isn't linked to a swatch), etc. should be added.

Some sort of channel representing plates to check were some Pantone or other spot colour are used, that we can modify perhaps (when on a pixel layer, using brushes on this layer or channel), would be great too. Or a special new panel for such purpose.

This way, we wouldn't be working blindly like we can feel sometimes.

I read through this from walt.farrell. But honestly, it seems very complicated to me. If I understood correctly, I would have to assign a global color to each asset and save it as an asset again?
Since I have well over 150 assets, this would be a considerable effort. Probably it would also go beyond the scope for my use. I assume that a manual change will probably be the easier (faster?) way for me.

Wosven: yes, that seems to make sense to me and would probably make some things easier in terms of assets and coloring. I hope that in version 2.0 (hopefully during 2021) will come an improved management for Global Colors and Assets.
Hopefully also non-destructive perspective editing of objects (such as fonts) and curves. That would be very nice.

But I would like to thank everyone very much for their effort and thoughts!
