Hey gang,

I'd really appreciate some (Laymans) instructions for a new hobbyist trying really hard to follow tutorials and gain some new digital skills.

I followed the video "Multiple strokes and fills" to try and work on some patterns, but it went entirely wrong even though I've never changed any settings (and even tried uninstalling and reinstalling my software, just in case)
If you see in this picture, my fill selection joins the start and end point of my line and fills that random area, rather than following the line on the inside or outside.
I've tried adding more strokes / fills and still can't get around this absolute disaster; it ends up like this no matter what I try.

Can anyone explain why this is happening and how to stop it?
Looking to create the same effect as seen in the tutorial screenshot included.
I'm so close to giving up on digital artwork, it feels very much like a lost cause at this depressingly early stage.

Thanks so much for any help at all!

I am assuming that while you have the pen tool selected you also have a fill colour.  Top right in your tool bar set colour FILL to NONE.  Its a white circle with a red stripe.

By the way welcome to the forum and to the wonderful world of design.  Don't give up....you will regret it in a number of years.  Persevere and then you will look back and say:  I'm so glad I didn't give up.  Everyone on this forum and throughout the whole world was once a beginner and some of them, I bet, had the urge to give up.

Microsoft - Like entering your home and opening the stainless steel kitchen door, with a Popup: 'Do you really want to open this door'? Then looking for the dishwasher and finding it stored in the living room where you have to download a water supply from the app store, then you have to buy microsoft compliant soap, remove the carpet only to be told that it is glued to the floor.. Don't forget to make multiple copies of your front door key and post them to all who demand access to all the doors inside your home including the windows and outside shed.

Apple - Like entering your home and opening the oak framed Kitchen door and finding the dishwasher right in front you ready to be switched on, soap supplied, and water that comes through a water softener.  Ah the front door key is yours and it only needs to open the front door.

Hi and welcome,

in your sample drawing you have just a line as a curve, which you gave a brownish stroke. But that line/curve doesn't have a closed path (closed start- and endpoints) which will form a closed shape then. Thus it's path is autoclosed and filled like what you've shown. See also in the online help ...

The bottom screenshot shows an outline drawing (closed shape) with an inner applied center lining! - Can be done by applying several strokes on your above shown initial line, use multiple bigger sized strokes, stacking order outer to inner from bottom to top (see below screenshot), not fills there.
