Opening Sony ARW files look very over exposed

Recommended Posts

Good evening

I'm 'very' new to Affinity Photo, installed it on the good wishes of the chap at the Apple store

Quick question.  Is there something I'm doing blatantly wrong that when I open a raw file from my Sony camera it is very over exposed?

I used to use photoshop for raw files but I have just thrown that old machine in the shed & moved over to Apple.

OS X Yosemite 10.10.5

This happens for every ARW file I open.

Any help would be much appreciated

I´m sorry to hear that. I still use (older) Sony DSLRs, more specifically A100 and A900 with tons of glass. So I had to check, have not done much with Affinity Photo applied to them so far. I am mainly Photoshop CS6, Photo Suite 9.5 plus NIK user, just got caught by Affinity.

This is not going to help you and I have no clue really, but none of the ones I open look as bad as this. Actually rather the opposite, they look quite good and processing with Affinity Photo is no issue either, only my incompetence with the new toolset is methinks.

For what it´s worth, my first digital was a Sony also, Mavica CD500. Only JPGs from that time, but those open quite OK as well.

Could it be that you have set some weird color profile in Preferences inadvertently? That´s about the only thing I can think of at this point; that is if the ARW files are OK of course, but I assume that to hold true in this case. Just my 0.02$ worth on it, here´s what I am using there (needless to say, I am delighted with it that way):

Hi duffy99,

Welcome to the forums.

In the Develop persona you can turn off the Develop Assistant, as this does apply settings to the RAW file as it opened. Once the file is open you can then use the tools to adjust your image, I find applying Tones > Curves usually corrects the over exposure.

Thanks

Thanks for the quick replies chaps.

I've had another tinker with this but to no avail.  Is there a way of resetting the program?  Do I need to uninstall & try again?

Would really like this to work.

Can't work out why the RAW files should open up so badly over exposed.
