I'm on Affinity Designer 1.8.6, and for some reason the noise on gradients is not working:

  1. Create a rectangle
  2. Apply a gradient
  3. Change the noise for any of the colors
  4. No noise is applied, and when you close the picker and come back, the noise is reset back to 0

This was definitely working before, although I'm not sure on what version.

I’ve just checked Designer 1.8.5 (Windows doesn’t have a 1.8.6 version) and a week-or-so-old 1.9.0 beta version and I can apply Noise to a gradient stop just fine.
If someone using 1.8.6 cannot confirm this issue then you might need to record a video showing us what you are doing.

I was using the Colour Panel rather than the pop-up as you were using but using the pop-up is working for me in the beta on Windows too. (The little swatch in the pop-up isn’t getting updated until I switch gradient stops but that’s a small issue which might not be in the latest version.)
I guess we can chalk this one up to the gremlins.

arcnor, thanks for the video.  Garry just beat me to the answer.  I was using the color panel also and it did work. Yes, in 1.8.6 it doesn't work from the context toolbar noise control.  But it does work in 1.9.0.11 so apparently the programmer already fixed this.

Ah yeah, I never use the color panel for that, and I've tried it and it works on 1.8.6 too, although as soon as I go back to the toolbar to change the color, it resets the noise back to 0. In any case, it seems I'll have to wait for 1.9 for it to be fixed, I guess.

Thanks everybody!

Mine does not work on 1.8.6 on OS X. But you can also click on the small circle that controls the Opacity. It will switch back and forth between Noise and Opacity.  I just found that out today too :)

Discovered this same bug in Affinity Publisher 1.10.4 yesterday.

@GarryP how do you use the color panel for this? I only know how to add a gradient from the top toolbar or the layer effects gradient overlay.

This is explained just in the post above yours:

You can find the circle where the arrow head is pointing towards.

@NotMyFault I ended up realizing this. I originally thought he was referring to setting a gradient with the color panel, and then I figured he may have just been talking about setting the noise.

I also would have never known that circle toggled back and forth between opacity and noise if I hadn’t found this thread. Learn something new every day!

Some things like that are told in the Online help too ...

I'm having this issue now on v.2.0.4 (release), but at least it's fixed in the latest Beta (the workaround I've found was to copy whatever object that had the gradient I want to edit, paste it into a new file in the Beta, edit the noise values there, and finally copy and paste the object back into the release version)…

Well, it seems this is a frequent regression and that Serif devs should pay more attention to this particular feature. 😬
