How best to increase canvas size of JPG and save as JPG

Recommended Posts

Say I have a JPG

I want to increase the size of the canvas

How can I then save the file as a jpg - without losing quality?

If I choose 100% I can end up with a big file.

If I choose less quality, I lose quality.

JPG - by definition optimises and reduces file size (correct me if I'm wrong).

I get that. But then I can use a program like Windows Paint and increase the canvas without compromising the file size or quality.

Am I missing something?

Thanks.

Hi,

To increase canvas size, just go to "Document - Resize canvas". It has options to let you resize as you want.

As regards getting a jpeg, you can't save as jpeg, you have to export as jpeg. But you probably know that already. I have noticed that just reducing the quality to 90% reduces the file size to a large extent without appreciably reducing the quality. Also, if you're still concerned, change the resampling option to bicubic or lanczos instead of the default bilinear.

Hope this helps.

No, if Open JPEG, then Save JPEG.

Really? With lossy JPEG file?

With lossy JPEG, even 100% (best quality) is still a loss of quality. You would need to use the lossless JPEG2000 (JPEG-LS).

So add white space either manually with crop tool or numerically with Canvas size -command. Simple save will overwrite your old file with 100% quality JPEG. With Export you can choose quality/size ratio.

Admittedly people say AP JPEG quality is not the best so for best quality/size ratio other tools are better.

ALL I want to do is append white space to the jpg.

Just write in the question, and you will be answered correctly.

Anchor point to Center, add size with desired space (x2).
