Claudio Bartolini Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 Hi There, I purchased Affinity Designer a few weeks ago, and as I am learning to use it, I noticed a white strip in the left lower corner of the window, almost blocking the option "scale with object" I can send you a screenshot if needed.... Any idea how to fix it? Thank you Claudio Quote
GarryP Posted December 14, 2020 Posted December 14, 2020 Welcome to the forums @Claudio Bartolini When you say “the window”, which window do you mean? It sounds like you are referring to the Layer Effects dialog but it will be good to know for sure. A (full-screen) screen-shot is normally useful. Callum 1 Quote
Claudio Bartolini Posted December 17, 2020 Author Posted December 17, 2020 Thanks Garry, I attached a screenshot. You are correct, the layer effects dialog box. Cheers Claudio Quote
GarryP Posted December 18, 2020 Posted December 18, 2020 That’s certainly not something I would expect to see. I also notice that your entry fields are not showing the values nicely. For example, you can’t see the bottom of the “p” in the Radius value field and the percentage sign in the Fill Opacity field isn’t fully visible. I don’t use OS X so I don’t know if that is normal for that operating system (doesn’t seem right to me) or whether it could be due to some setting(s) on your particular machine, which could also be causing the white block, perhaps. Maybe someone with a Mac could shed some light on this. (I’ve attached a screen-grab from Windows to show the difference.) Quote
Claudio Bartolini Posted December 19, 2020 Author Posted December 19, 2020 You are right, I have not realized that the letter "p" is incomplete. But I have no idea where to send this issue within Affinity company, perhaps they could help.... Thanks again Quote
GarryP Posted December 19, 2020 Posted December 19, 2020 If other people with a Mac can confirm that they see the fields the same way as you then that might show that the application is displaying things incorrectly. On the other hand, if no-one else with a Mac is seeing the fields the same way then there’s a chance that the problem is only with your set-up. We only have a single example so far and that’s not enough to base any conclusions upon. Once we have more information we will have a better idea of what the problem could be and, therefore, whether it is something that the developers need to look at. Quote

Also Garry did you notice that COLOUR is spelt wrong. "Color" is USA spelling only. Unless affinity coding makes it possible for software changes in spelling to synchronise with their OS language preference? I don't know about this side of things. GarryP Posted December 19, 2020 Posted December 19, 2020 If the developers are following ‘normal’ practices, the texts used in the user interface will be stored in tables – one table per language. Each text field in the UI will have a ‘code’ which refers to a particular ‘line’ which is shared across all the tables. When the software needs to display a part of the UI it looks at the language specified in Preferences, then looks up the ‘code’ in the table for that language and displays the text related to that ‘code’. For example, code “Effects_3D_Specular_Color” may refer to the text “Specular Color” in the US-English table and “Specular Colour” in the UK-English table. Other languages will have their own texts that may not use the word “colour” (in any variant) at all. Claudio is probably using the default (I think) US-English language setting. Quote

Ok makes sense, though I am also unfortunatey using US-English but mine is spelt Colour, as I would expect. GarryP Posted December 19, 2020 Posted December 19, 2020 Chris26: I’ve just switched Language in Preferences to “English (United States)” and I get “Color”, see attached image. Switching back to “English (United Kingdom)” gives me “Colour” again. I don’t know why you are seeing the United Kingdom spelling with the US language selected. GarryP Posted December 19, 2020 Posted December 19, 2020 Thanks. It looks like Claudio has slightly larger text than you have. I wonder if this is – in part, or wholly – causing the white rectangle. Do you know if you have changed the text size on your machine, or do you know that it’s the default size? Quote
Claudio Bartolini Posted December 19, 2020 Author Posted December 19, 2020 Dear All, I DEEPLY appreciate your help, as I am new to this application. I changed the language to "USA English" and I changed the font to "Default" Attached images. The problem with the incomplete "p" has been resolved (see attached image) but the white stripe still shows up. Thanks to all for your interest. Claudio Quote
Celia at Grafted Works Posted December 23, 2020 Posted December 23, 2020 That's so weird. I'm running AD on a Mac as well, but I don't have that white rectangle. However, I am waiting to update to Big Sur and the newest AD update (made for Big Sur), because I heard there were issues with both of them. What version of AD are you running, @Claudio Bartolini? Claudio Bartolini Posted December 23, 2020 Author Posted December 23, 2020 Hi There, Thanks for your feedback. I am running Affinity version 1.8.6 but my MacOS is High Sierra. I have an older computer. Quote
wonderings Posted December 23, 2020 Posted December 23, 2020 Running on a Mac with Mojave and no white box. I would start by uninstalling Designer and reinstalling. Definitely looks like something glitchy is going on. If you look at the numbers in the different adjustable options in the OP screen shot they look out of place as well. Take the first one under radius. It looks like the bottom of the "p" is going out of the box. Quote
Claudio Bartolini Posted December 23, 2020 Author Posted December 23, 2020 Thank you, problem solved!! Quote
