Support for Extracting/Using Metadata

Do any of the current Affinity products provide a mechanism for extracting metadata from tiff/jpeg files that can then be used to generate captions or other text objects? 

The old Lightroom, for example, had some support for extracting metadata from images and using that data to format captions ... this was useful for creating slideshows and generating captions for books. 

Perhaps this feature is available in some other Affinity Product (Designer)?

Hi,

You can view, add and modify metadata in APhoto, but for now there's no way in APublisher to use some matadata fields in the fields of the document, to generate automatically caption and credits/copyrights depending of the image below/above.

Okay. What if I use a tool, such as ExifTool to extract information from the desired images. Would those data need to be converted into RTF (or a similar) format to be dragged or imported into Textfields that would reside within Publisher (in other words: I might be able to drag text from structured files created by a third-party application). I'm asking because the metadata in question contains foreign syntax marks and GPS data.

You can check or get the metadata using APhoto, they are visible and copiable:

Your Publisher document does not have any metadata.

The embedded or linked image file may have metadata. You'll need to use the Edit Image button, or double-click its layer in the Layers panel, and open it as an editable document. Then if the image has metadata you will find it in the Photo Persona.

Again, those metadata are specific to images (Exif, IPTC, RAW, etc.), and can't apply to a document, when usually those contain different images.

The fields about the document should be in the Publisher persona, specifically in the fields panel, where one day we'll be able to add the fields we need.

That's a trick for now, but it's a bad workflow that need improvement

In the Metadata panel:

• EXIF data and IPtC(Image) seem specific to images.
• IPTC (Contact), Rights, and Details are not necessarily limited to images, and could be relevant to anything. You could add the IPTC (Contact) and Rights fields to your Publisher document if you wanted to.
• Raw details (not RAW) is simply the raw XML form of the complete metadata.

The Metadata panel is specific to the document, not to a selected layer.

You can add data everywhere, but usually there's a specific text frame in a document with those data, we call it "ours" in French, no need to export as image to read them. No one will think to read such metadata in a document.

But the metadata panel can answer an important need, that's why it would be more usefull if modified. As it is now, it's back to 90’ applications, needing other tools or long tricks to achieve usual tasks.
