I am new to Affinity and finding it very confusing at times, what I am trying to do is put a today photo (landscape shape) as a background and then place a black and white photo on top that is portrait shaped and scale it then line it up so it sits exactly over the new modern photo taken in the same place but decades apart and blend in the old and new, as a now and then image. Every time I try the landscape shaped photo appears in a window as portrait shape and only a part of it is shown, I also cant seem to move the older mono photo around to place it on top where I want it so I can erase the parts not needed. Is there any easy to follow steps that will help me to do this ? So basically I cant get the background layer and the mono layer in the same little window bottom right or move the mono where I want it as the top layer so I can use the eraser tool, I do not need an exact shape just blending the edges of the mono layer into the bottom layer once its placed exactly where I want it, I managed to it once with two photos the same size and shape by . watching a youtube tutorial on how to merge two images  but with two photos of different sizes and shapes I cant get anywhere with it. I do not yet really understand using layers or masks. Any help much appreciated.

It sounds as though you’re starting with a document in portrait format and placing the landscape image in it. You need to do it the other way around: open the landscape (colour) image, place the portrait (monochrome) image and then move the new mono layer to the desired position.
