Designer and Pixel persona pixel layer

Recommended Posts

Am working on a personal project in Designer.  On part of an angel's wing I've used a brush in Pixel Persona to make some of the colored washes and those brushes are on their own pixel layer.  Having not done this before, my question is:  can the pixel layer be edited, i.e., say I wanted to change a wash color or size.  If this is possible, how is this accomplished?  If it's not possible....oh well, I guess.  Some of this stuff you don't know you need to know how to do, until you're actually trying it!

Thanks for help....again!

You seem to have already been editing pixel layers so I’m confused as to why you are asking it you can edit them.
Would you be able to give us a better idea of what you have and what you want to do with it?
(Full-screen screenshots including your Layers Panel showing the layer(s) involved in the question are usually a good start.)

Thank you for asking for clarification.  Here goes......

What I'm making is in Designer because I prefer to work using vectors and their editability factor.  Some of the angel's wing I'm making calls for a wash-type brush, which I thought I'd try in the Pixel Persona from Designer.  While in Pixel Persona, the program tells you any brushes you use will be on their own pixel layer because they are raster brushes.  Okay, I get it.  See attached screenshot.

My question is really pretty simple:  once I've made the washes using the paintbrush tool in Pixel Persona, are those washes editable any more in Pixel Persona?  Apparently not because they're raster brushes and not like the vector pen, pencil or vector brush tools in Designer which you can endlessly edit the nodes to get just right.  Maybe I've answered my own question.

If there actually is a way to edit the raster brush layer and any brushes on it, I'd sure like to know how to do that.  And barring getting the raster brush exactly right on the first try, maybe I should just stick with vector pen, pencil, or the vector brush tools in Designer.

Ah, I think I see now.

The pixel layer is still editable but not like you would edit a vector.
A pixel layer is just a rectangle of pixels and there is no way to edit how those pixels were ‘laid down’. In other words, once you have made an edit to a pixel layer, the affected pixels are ‘fixed’ until you make another edit by changing pixels individually or en masse by using a brush or whatever. (There are some exceptions, such as adjustments and filters, but they aren’t relevant here.) Note: This is a very crude explanation.

One thing you might be able to do is build up a ‘library’ of pixel layers, each with a single stroke, which can be added to your illustration to build up the effect you want – maybe using Blend Modes to help with that. See my crude attached image where I have used different pixel layers, each with a Recolour Adjustment added, to create a terrible mess. (I’m sure you will be able to come up with something much better.)

On the other hand, there are so many great vector brushes out there that I’m fairly sure you will be able to find something you can use. Check in the Resources section of these forums and browse around to see what you can get – most are free to use. Just make sure they can be used in the Designer persona – Vector Brush – and not the Pixel Persona (but I don’t know how you would do that as I don’t use brushes much myself).

If you want to get specific help you could start a new thread called something like “Which vector brushes can I use to create these angel wings?” giving an example image. I’m sure someone will be able to point you in the right direction.

Thank you for replying!  I was pretty sure I was right on not being able to edit a pixel (raster) brush without doing what you explained.  And that ain't gonna happen!!  This kind of insanity with raster brushes is why I work in vectors.  I've got a lot of vector brushes for Designer and I'll see what I can use that is similar to my screenshot above, but I'll go -- again! -- and see if there's any vector brushes for Designer I might have inadvertently missed.  Sometimes I don't download brushes or textures because they're not specifically what I'm looking for at the moment, but from this point forward I'll download what I like for possible future uses.

Thank you again.
