bsmldrs
Hi all, I'm currently playing around with Affinity Designer and I'm starting to like it the more I play around with it. But there's currently a small thing which I'm trying to wrap my head around. I cannot seem to create a true vector mask. I want to have a text filled with a pattern from another source. When applying this pattern as a vector mask, it looks perfectly fine in AD, but when exporting to PDF, it's suddenly rasterized. I tried multiple things, such as creating curves instead of text and exporting with 'rasterise unsupported effects'. But without any luck.. The problem seems to be in grouping curves and then applying a vector mask, because if I just try one curve, it's fully vector. But when adding a group or layer as a mask, it's rasterized. Is it possible to apply a mask and keep it vector when exporting (as pdf)? Or is there any other way to create a mask like effect with it still being vector? I attached two example files in which the above occurs. Hopefully somebody can point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance! example.afdesign example.pdf
Staff Callum Posted September 7, 2015 Staff Share Posted September 7, 2015 Hi Bsmldrs, Welcome to the Forums :) This is an issue I have come across before. The only way I have found around this is to export as a SVG or PSD instead of a PDF. I hope this helps :) C Quote Please tag me using @ in your reply so I can be sure to respond ASAP. Dave Harris
It seems to be to do with the way the clip is made. If you first create the text, then Copy the pattern, select the text and use Edit > Paste Inside, the result is the same visually but exports as vector. You can get the same result by dragging in the Layers tab, but you have to put the pattern below the text rather than vice versa. Creating the clip by dragging the text alongside the layer you want to apply it to, seems to confuse Affinity because the text can have multiple strokes and fills. It's only safe to export as vector if none of the strokes or fills would be visible, and currently it doesn't bother to check.
