howardh Posted December 4, 2020 Posted December 4, 2020 (edited) Hello all! I'm brand new to Affinity and to vector drawing in general. I recently acquired a Shaper Origin which is a handheld CNC for woodworking. It. requires .svg files in order to recognize them. I have a shape that I can load into Affinity, export it as an svg file but the machine only recognizes the outline. I need to convert the shape where not only the outline is ready to cut but also to be able to pocket cut the field inside the outline so a positive of the shape can be dropped into the negative, i.e. an inlay. How do I tell the software to recognize the pocket I need to cut? Thanks in advance. I have attached the file I want to pocket cut. Texas_Longhorns_logo.svg Edited December 4, 2020 by howardh Quote
firstdefence Posted December 4, 2020 Posted December 4, 2020 Welcome to the forum @howardh The SVG doesn’t display any “pockets” ? it’s literally just an outline, a single curve. howardh Posted December 4, 2020 Author Posted December 4, 2020 Thanks for that clarification. Like I mentioned, I really don't have any experience using this type of software. I was told by a Shaper person that the design must be "closed" before their engine can recognize it in order to cut a pocket. How do I close this shape? Quote
Old Bruce Posted December 4, 2020 Posted December 4, 2020 Your design was not closed. The upper right had coincident nodes, start and end were overlapped but not joined. 19 minutes ago, howardh said: ... Texas_Longhorns_logo bruce.svg I selected them and used the Context toolbar 'Close Curve' button. firstdefence 1 Quote Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6 Affinity Designer 2.6.0 | Affinity Photo 2.6.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.0 | Beta versions as they appear. firstdefence Posted December 4, 2020 Posted December 4, 2020 Thought I’d post this to explain what a pocket is and how it’s done: https://support.shapertools.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360005473253-Pocketing-Procedure So a pocket is the shape cut out to a depth, I assume the same shape is cut out of a material to insert into the pocket. Fascinating machine, would love to have a go with one. Me and power tools can turn premium hardwood into expensive kindling. Fast! But yes that is fascinating in that it is a hand held CNC machine. CNC for those of us who don't have the shop space for a traditional deck version. Quote

This is a cool tool!! That’s so cool, I’m seriously considering buying one as I may have a market for it in my customer base. I was on the website looking at the videos all last night.
