Export dialog for exporting selection not working as it should

Can we please have back the function when you export a object from the page that SELECTION is selected in the dropdown of the export dialog?

It seems we have this already, or else maybe I am not understanding what you are requesting. As I understand the request, this is what you are looking for:

It is also available in other applications.

Perhaps the requirement can be understood as if an object is selected (which will almost always be the case), then by default the "Selection with (or without?) background" option should be selected from the dropdown Area list.

That might be what was intended, but since (as you say) there will almost always be some object selected, a change like that would inconvenience users for the more common usage, exporting all the pages.

A change like that might make sense for Designer or Photo, but even there I think the more usual case will be exporting the complete document, not whatever happens to be selected.

Maybe remembering the last setting would help here. Once I select "Selection with/without background", this option will remain selected for the next export.
The current reset to the "Whole document" can be really annoying - but this is generally true, see the myriad requirements for "sticky" settings.

Here's some screen shots of how it worked in PagePlus automatically and somehow the program knew if no objects were selected or if a object was selected, I've also included screen shots of the way Affinity Designer works when selecting and exporting objects as a image.

I've also created the Affinity Designer export challenge, using multiple stars. Now in real application there may be other types of objects for export but that seems to be immaterial at this point. But to demonstrate what it's like during a typical work day where time is of the essences I think the stars will do well.

1. Make a Affinity Designer layout and place multiple stars on the document.

2. Select one star and then go to File > Export and then select from the drop down "Selection without background" and then click the Export button. Then go back repeat for each star one by one on the page until all have been exported.

As a designer you may build spreads and need to export individual areas such as logos and other elements to use in different ways. So having the Affinity Designer program ask you each and every time:
Whole Document?
Selection with background?
Selection without background?
is just not working.

😂

Thank You

Or, if you're in the Designer application:

1. Switch to Export Persona

2. Switch to Layers panel and click the button to add a slice for each layer

3. Switch to Slices panel, select the links if export, and export then all with one click.

(Note: if you're in Publisher, use File > Edit in Designer before step 1.)

To echo what Walt says, it seems that Affinity Designer is the better tool in this case, as its Export persona is made for such things. You even mentioned Affinity Designer in the quoted text, but as we are in the Publisher sub-forum with Publisher screenshots, I am not sure which you are talking about at this time.

Anyway, the Export persona in Affinity Designer (the Designer app, not the persona in Publisher) is rather capable when you are doing things like logos and other art assets, far more so than simple using the Export command from the File menu (which is found in all three of the Affinity suite).

Thank you Walt, I tried it out and it worked good in its application. I found I had to group the objects together or else the slice tool would make a slice for each object. I also found if you move the elements back in Designer the slice did not move with it. Having to launch Designer to edit and create the slices seems clunky. I've been a Serif user for a long time and migrated a lot of my work flow away from Adobe because their programs created a lot of unnecessary work and I also got tired of the crashing.

Hi garrettm30, Sorry I meant Publisher for the entire post. The slice tool still seems like, is to much work just to get some objects exported off the page, so who knows if Serif will ever put back the features of the export. Ya it would be great if all three programs had the export feature from PagePlus.

You're welcome.

Yes, the workflow may have some flaws, but for the kind of work you seem to be talking about it may be simpler to just start in Designer, and stay there, until/unless you need some feature from Publisher or Photo.

Hi Walt & garrettm30, My apologies, after using the slices on a multi object project the whole thing is a massive time saver.

  1. Brought the objects in and named the layers. (key time saver)
  2. Opened the page in Designer and made the slices
  3. Exported all the objects in one swoop and the resulting files have the layer names.

Thank you for your help.
Warren
