Curves Adjustment Picker Problem

Affinity Photo Version 1.8.5.703

When I click the picker button and then drag my mouse onto the photo image I do not see any selection on Curves to show the selected tonal value.  How do I get this picker tool to work?

You must click to set a point where the picker is over and click on a point/node and drag with the left mouse button hold to change a curve orientation.

Click and release the button named "Picker" then click and drag at some location in the document view. Just clicking in the document view does not add a point to the curve. You must make at least a tiny drag. Yes, we should be able to just click without dragging, but this is Affinityland, a parallel universe with alternative laws of usability.
