refine selection / output new layer with mask

Recommended Posts

hello, i am wondering about the result of the refine selection panel and the output ›new layer with mask‹. i attached some screenshots:

1: orginal image
2: result (new layer with mask – that works wonderfully)
3: new layer, mask not showing
> why does the duplicate of the orignal image get this black colouring ? i don’t understand why this happens, is it just the way it works ?

thanks a lot for further information,
nicole

Hi @nicolefally, welcome to the forum.

What you are seeing is called 'colour decontamination'.

It is mentioned in the help here... https://affinity.help/photo/English.lproj/pages/Selections/selections_refine.html

Specifically...

Selection and Mask are ideal when applying adjustments and filters after refining the selection area. New layer and New layer with mask are suited to cutting out and compositing; colour 'decontamination' is also used for achieving high-quality cut-out results.

If you want a mask without colour decontamination, then duplicate the layer, then refine > mask.

Hope this helps!
