Crashing - Can’t Access or Save Art

Recommended Posts

I spent 8 hours on an illustration and now any time I try and open the artwork or save it, the app crashes. Every single time. So I can’t access what I spent hours of time drawing. I afraid to even use the app and waste time illustrating just to have the app crash every single time I try and open my artwork or save it. Kind of sucks when I paid money for an app that I can’t even use. Video attached.

Try doing a hard reset to clear ram. Hold power button off until you get the slider then turn off. Reboot by holding power on. Let us know if that helps.

On iOS it pays to immediately save a new file by tapping the 3 bar menu on Home Screen (below file icon). Then while editing, regularly save your work with the Document/Save menu command. This will update an afdesign file in your default save location (Designer folder on iPad or iCloud). This file can be copied and backed up for security. Any glitches, simply load most recent save and continue working. If you don’t save this way, you only have a proprietary file in sandbox that cannot be accessed other than with the app. If it glitches then your work is gone.

Hi @MFF,

Welcome to the forums and sorry for the delayed reply.

If what DM1 suggested fails, you can try this:

  1. Download iMazing (Commercial application for Mac, but the free trial is only needed, unfortunately i'm not aware of any Windows applications)
  2. Connect your iPad to your Mac
  3. Make a backup of the iPad through iMazing
  4. In the top right click the iPad's name and select the backup
  5. Inside the Apps > Affinity Designer folder > Library > Application Support > com.seriflabs.affinitydesigner.ios >
  6. Drag the Autosave folder to the desktop (iMazing trial allows 10 drag operations, so dragging the folder will get all files exported at once)
  7. Renamed from .autosave to .afdesign and check through these files.

Can confirm this still works In October 2022, much to my relief! Thanks Gabe!
