Using A.PH. under Aperture 3 as an external image editor

Recommended Posts

Hi,

currently I use APERTURE to organize and easy editing of digital media (photos, scans, etc.) on an OSX 10.10 environment.

To do retouching of quite large technical drawings, I do involve ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 10 EDITOR as an external editor beneath APRERTURE:
On command, APERTURE generates a PSD file, starts PS-E with the file list (up to 4) and the editor starts up. Saving the edited files brings the files back to the exact location (within the aperture library file). On returning to APERTURE, I do see the edited PSD instead of the originally generated PSD file. So far, everything fine and works as expected.

Since I work on really large scans and on large resolutions screens (4k native res), I thought it might be a smart move to involve AFFINITY PHOTO as external editor in that environment. So. for starters, I got myself a test license. The APERTURE prefs were changed to use AFFINITY PHOTO as an external editor using the PSD 8 bit or PSD 16 bit.

A test drive with APERTURE showed this: Selecting an image in a library, then editing with the external editor. AFFINITY PHOTO showed up and the image in PSD format opened and was ready to be edited.
But now: When I SAVE the worked image file, AFFINITY PHOTO asks for a path, where to save the image, instead of knowing, which location the image was loaded from and offering exact this location in order to put back the PSD file to the place where APERTURE works wih it.

Well, I do not know exactly the path, where the files are placed within an aperture library - and honestly, I do not intend to bother, because it is almost never the same path.

Can you help: How AFFINITY PHOTO is set up that it offers exact the path to save to, where the file was opened from ?

Best regards

Thomas

Hi Thomas W

if you go into the apps preferences under General and enable save over PSD files does this fix your workflow? Please note this will overwrite the original file.

Thanks
