JBusby
I'm getting a message when I try to use the spell checker. It reads: "Unsupported languages. Document contains languages (en-CA) for which no dictionary is installed." My Dictionary Folder is empty (ProgramData\Affinity\Common\1.0\Dictionaries). Is there an (en-US) dictionary I could download? (Windows 10).

walt.farrell
Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums, @JBusby. You already have an en-US dictionary installed by default in each Affinity application, but the default dictionaries are in a different location. The problem is that you need an en-CA dictionary. When you follow the directions in the FAQ you'll end up here for the English dictionaries. And they do have the .aff and .dic files for en_CA. I do not see the hyphenation file there, though. So you'll probably need to download the en_US (or en_GB) hyphenation file and rename it to en_CA when you install it. JBusby
Thanks for the quick reply. I followed the link you provided and ended up there for the English dictionaries. I found two links for the .aff and .dic files, but I can't make any sense of them. Do I copy / paste something? Is there a download file that I'm not seeing? If you could push me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!
Pšenda
en_CA.aff en_CA.dic GitHub is not optimal for less experienced users.I suggested that Serif create at least a specific thread with appropriate dictionaries so that less experienced users would not have to search for them somewhere on the Internet.Unfortunately, Serif did not even respond. JBusby
Reply to All: I followed Leigh's instructions--RAW files--right-click--download etc. The files were saved in the default folder. The file types were both .txt, but no file was appended with a .txt extension in the default folder. I restarted the application, opened Text / Spelling / Check Spelling, but I still got the same message ("Unsupported languages. Document contains languages (en-CA) for which no dictionary is installed"). So I deleted the files and installed Leigh's files. One file type was saved as an AFF file. The .dic file was saved as a txt file and I had to add the .dic extension in the default file (ProgramData / Affinity / Common / 1.0 / Dictionaries). And again, the same "Unsupported languages" message appeared after I restarted the application and tried to use the spell-checker. Admittedly, I'm a user with less experience at such things, but, after several attempts, if I'm still doing something wrong here, I don't know what it is. Thanks for your help. dehskins

JBusby
In my previous reply to all, I indicated that I downloaded your files and installed them as my second option. I only received your post with the files after finding your instructions to download the files manually, The files you sent went straight into the default folder, but I had to add the .dic extension to the en_CA file. That file was automatically saved as a txt file type when I clicked the link. The en_CA.aff file was automatically saved as an AFF file type when I clicked the link. Sorry if my post was misleading in some way, it was not intended. In summary, both attempts to install the files have not had any success. dehskins

It needs to be named en-CA.dic, not en-CA.dic.txt. Open an Explorer window and untick the option to ‘Hide extensions for known file types’ so that you can see and remove the ‘.txt’ part of the file name. If it is still included there (maybe some settings of your OS), then simply name / rename the files correctly using File Explorer (or using any file manager). JBusby
To Psenda (Eternal Beginner): Sorry about that. I hope I have the right person now, and I thank you for your patience. The names of the files in the default folder are en_CA.aff and en_CA.dic. I deleted the files in the default folder and started again. In my latest attempt, after I downloaded your files again, I unticked the option to ‘Hide extensions for known file types’, but I found no hidden .txt extension. You've been referring to downloading the files to the default directory. I'm not sure which directory you mean. The directory structure is critical, as described in the FAQ. You must have Publisher's dictionary directory and Under that, a directory named en_CA (or possibly en-CA) and Within that, the .aff file and the 2 .dic files. Seweryn
Dears, I am not sure what I do ing wrong, but according to the documentation: Quote Installing alternative spelling dictionaries Spelling dictionaries are installed for the languages supported by Affinity apps, except for Chinese, Japanese and Russian. To install for these languages do the following: Visit the OpenOffice™ website and download the appropriate language dictionary or try an internet search for "spelling dictionaries". Create a language code folder (e.g., ru_RU) in C:\ProgramData\Affinity\Common\1.0\Dictionaries and copy the downloaded dictionary files into this folder. Restart app. There is a way to install additional dictionaries, but this is not working with OpenOffice files e.g. dict_ru-ru.oxt Do you have any hints about this? Thanks in advance and regards, Seweryn. Edited November 30, 2020 by Seweryn

Seweryn
@walt.farrell Thanks a lot for the hint. I had unpacked the files from dict_ru-ru.oxt to the dict_ru-ru directory. Then created subfolder in side: C:\Program Files\Affinity\Common\1.0\Dictionaries\ru_RU Then copied all necessary files from dict_ru-ru: ru_RU.dic ru_RU.aff hyph_ru.dic Restarted Publisher. And I have it under Character > Language > Spelling. walt.farrell
